Summary
The Genetics Manager assists in supervising and managing personnel, directing workflow, training, regulatory/QA compliance, and coordinating all technical staff activities concerning Cytogenetics and FISH. Provides operational guidance and counseling on issues ensuring the work of the team is completed accurately and appropriate specimen turn-around times are maintained. Responsible for providing assistance with sample preparation, analysis, and interpretation. Ensures the technologists acquire continuing education necessary for recertification as well as meet the requirements for yearly competencies and proficiencies.
Responsibilities
- Verifies test procedures and oversees the establishment of the laboratory's test performance characteristics, including the precision and accuracy of each test system.
- Maintains a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed establishes the parameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensures that these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process from the initial receipt of the specimen, through sample analysis and reporting of test results.
- Resolves technical problems and ensures remedial actions are taken whenever test results deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
- Controls patient test results ensuring reporting does not occur until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
- Conducts, audits, and identifies training needs and assures that each individual performing tests receives regular in-service training and education appropriate for the type and complexity of the laboratory systems performed.
- Assists with the creation of documentation of processes and SOPs, communicates them to the team as well as enforces adherence.
- Develop a process for immediate notification of a physician or other clinical personnel responsible for patient care when the results of certain tests exceed critical limits that are important for prompt patient management decisions.
- Integrates all proficiency testing (PT) samples within the routine workload, verifies sample analysis is conducted by a team engaged in routine test patients/client samples, using the same primary method systems as for patient/client samples. Ensures participation of PT for all Cytogenetic/FISH employees yearly.
- Coordinates instrument checks against each other at least twice a year for correlation of patient/client results.
- Coordinates workflow on a daily basis to ensure timely analysis, reporting of patient samples, and handling the daily/weekly/monthly scheduling, including lab rotations. Manages timekeeping for staff.
- Ensures the results of tests performed are reviewed by the laboratory director or general supervisor within 24 hours.
- Ensures the lab has adequate inventories of reagents and supplies.
- Resolves employee relations issues and recommends disciplinary action when required. Initiates disciplinary action when control results exceed defined acceptance limits.
- Acts as the first point of contact on technical, procedural, and policy questions.
