Summary Of Position Functions

Plans and coordinates with the estimating department and sales staff, process, and project opportunity selection to assist in company and department goals and ensure objectives are met.


Essential Position Functions

  • Reviews all bid proposal forms and information provided including but not limited to project plans, specifications, and drawings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimates.
  • Reviews and considers historical data from prior jobs in progress and / or completed as relates to bid proposal needs and requirements.
  • Maintain detailed tracking of jobs bid and awarded for historical data use and trend information.
  • Prepare bid proposals and estimates by accurately calculating complete takeoff of HVAC scope of work and noting any discrepancies or inaccuracies.
  • Participate in bid related presentations and submittal of qualification information.
  • Maintain files of working documents as back up for estimate amounts, including accurate information from vendors, suppliers, and lower tier subcontractors as applicable on a per project basis.
  • Support other departments and / or personnel as required in preparing estimates, related change orders and other job cost factors.
  • Review design options and recommend the best solution based on cost, engineering quality and availability of materials and equipment to meet design intent.
  • Review all final estimate packages to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to submission of bid documents to manager for approval.
  • Participate in project related meetings including pre-bid scope meetings, meetings and communications; post-bid follow up; and upon award - job startup / turnover.
  • Provide technical assistance and bid confirmation support in contract review process, negotiations, scope of work and change orders.
  • May assist other departments or personnel in the preparation of studies, materials and methods, recommendations, and cost estimates.
  • Use IMC (International Mechanical Code) book as reference material in performing or directing the performance of work.
  • Follow department standards and procedures.
  • Regularly communicate appropriate information between management team, sales and staff.
  • Participates in and/or leads individual and group presentations to company management and clients.
  • Initiates, develops, and maintains working relationships with industry partners including clients, design professionals, subcontractors, and vendors.

Educational and Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in construction management or similar curriculum, industry related experience may serve as a substitute.
  • 3-7 or more years' experience / knowledge of construction; design; field and cost management as a Mechanical Estimator or similar position.
  • Demonstrated commitment to education and training of department staff and project personnel.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Veregy's services and processes is required which can be obtained through intellect, technical inclination, and dedication to gain such knowledge.
  • Knowledge (Intermediate to advanced) of various operating systems, software products (e.g. MS Office, etc.), is required.
  • Computer software proficiency including Microsoft Project, Viewpoint, RS Means, Trimble Estimating and / or other job-related hardware and software applications that may be required.
  • IMC Code Compliance knowledge, further training can be offered.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of contract documents, including plans, specifications, general conditions, and other related items.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of construction (technology, equipment, methods, etc.) as well as an understanding of company and industry practices, processes and standards and their impact on project activities.
  • Applicable estimating knowledge of wet and dry side of HVAC work.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently manage time / workload.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, business, professional, and technical documents.
  • Ability to effectively respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers and staff.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to write presentations, articles, routine reports, proposals, and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management and staff.
  • Ability to speak and communicate effectively before customers and staff.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts and percentages.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and tactfully negotiate priority with end users.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and extra hours if needed.
